Moisture Protection
Vapor Barrier Packaging in Denver, CO — Moisture Protection for Freight
Moisture ruins more freight than drops do — quietly, from the inside of the crate. Specialized Moving Services provides vapor barrier packaging in Denver: items are sealed inside heat-sealed foil-laminate barrier film with calculated desiccant, so machinery, electronics, and sensitive goods arrive as dry as they left. It's standard practice for ocean freight, long-term storage, and anything with bare metal, bearings, or circuit boards. We've been protecting Colorado freight this way since 1988, in our Englewood shop or on-site at your facility.
How vapor barrier packaging works
Air holds water. Seal ordinary air inside a crate and every temperature drop pushes it toward condensation — on your machined surfaces, inside your control cabinet, under your paint. Barrier packaging breaks the cycle:
- The item is wrapped or bagged in foil-laminate barrier film — a multi-layer material that water vapor can't meaningfully pass through
- Desiccant is placed inside the barrier, sized to the enclosed air volume and the trip duration
- The film is heat-sealed closed, creating a sealed micro-climate that stays dry regardless of what the container does
- Where specified, humidity indicator cards make the protection verifiable at the destination
When you need it
- Ocean freight — condensation inside a container ('container rain') is routine, not rare
- Machinery and equipment with bare machined surfaces, bearings, or hydraulics that flash-rust
- Electronics, instrumentation, and control cabinets
- Long-term storage of equipment, tooling, or household items in non-climate-controlled space
- Military, aerospace, and industrial shipments where the receiving spec requires barrier protection
Part of the crate, or on its own
Most barrier work happens inside a crate we're already building — the item is sealed, then blocked and braced so nothing punctures the film in transit. But we also barrier-wrap items going into your own packaging, your storage program, or a container we're loading. If you're not sure whether your shipment needs it, tell us what it is and where it's going; we'll give you a straight answer, including 'you don't need it' when you don't.
How it works
- 1
Tell us the cargo and route
What the item is, its sensitivity, the destination, and how long it'll be sealed — transit plus any storage time.
- 2
We spec the protection
Barrier film, desiccant quantity, and indicators if wanted — quoted with the crate or as a standalone service.
- 3
Seal and pack
Wrapped, desiccant placed, heat-sealed, and photographed before the crate closes around it.
- 4
Ship dry
The item rides in its own dry micro-climate no matter what the container or warehouse does.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is vapor barrier packaging?
The item is sealed inside foil-laminate barrier film with desiccant, creating a dry sealed environment inside the crate. It protects against condensation, humidity, and salt air during shipping and storage.
Do I need it for ocean freight?
For anything moisture-sensitive — machinery, electronics, metals, fine furniture — yes. Condensation inside ocean containers is routine. For short domestic ground moves it's usually unnecessary, and we'll tell you so.
How long does the protection last?
Desiccant is sized to the sealed air volume and the expected duration. Properly specced, barrier packaging protects for months of transit and storage. Tell us the timeline and we'll size it accordingly.
Can you vapor-seal something without building a crate?
Yes. We barrier-wrap items going into your own packaging, storage, or containers. It's better inside a crate — the film needs mechanical protection — but the service stands alone.
